Unsuspecting fans of James Douglas Muir “Jay” Leno were in for a big surprise when a virtual reality demonstration brought the legendary American comedian, actor, philanthropist and TV host out of their goggles and into a classic car.
The virtual reality experience, dubbed ‘Jay’s Ride Along’, was released last year for Samsung’s Gear VR to promote Jay’s already popular show on CNBC: Jay Leno’s Garage. However, for the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance, the funny man wanted to shock auto enthusiasts and curious onlookers who graced the annual rare car and motorcycle show in Beverly Hills.
Jay’s naughty idea was plain and simple: while car lovers sat inside his 1954 Jaguar XK120 convertible, he would sneak into the vintage ride and ambush them when the two-minute demo was over. Those fortunate souls were blown away when they found Jay sitting right next to them in the front seat!
And while most folks will never get a chance to ride with Jay in his Jaguar, you now have an idea of what it feels like thanks to 360° video technology. The Jaguar XK120 is one of Jay’s favorite cars. In fact, it is the first sports car he ever sat in, and he said he still remembers seeing the car for the first time when he was just nine years old. Since then, he decided he needed to own one. It came true 25 years later when he finally purchased a 1954 Jaguar XK120.
